I'll weigh in, even though you've already decided (good choice btw). I got a malletech a few months ago, but before that played most other brands for years at several schools, but this instrument was it in the end, no question.
The things I don't like -
- yes, you will probably have to wait a few months to get your instrument, but know that upfront, and plan ahead. Good things take time.
-I don't own 2 of them
The good things -
- Totally movable and possible to assemble by ONE PERSON ALONE. I needed this, you might not.
-The soft cases RULE. if you move your instrument around.
-the finest looking instrument out there (to me), and the height adjustment is money, totally hidden, and idiot-proof. (Ian said about the marimba one, "height adjustable system - i don't really see how it could be easier....you bend down," stop right there. How could it be easier? Start with no bending down.)
-Tunable stops on the whole thing. Big difference.
Yes they've got wide bars at the bottom. They sound incredible, but are a bigger reach. I debated this endlessly before choosing. The true bottom line for me was it was the best sounding intrument. Period. If you really, really care about the instrument you're getting, sound should be highest on the list. Nobody chooses a Stradivarius for ease of playing first and sound second. For me to say "Well, this one over here is my dream instrument, but it's too hard to play, so I got one that doesn't sound as good 'cause it's easier." seemed ludicrous. I just couldn't justify it. Get longer mallets. Get finger transplants. Whatever. It's worth it.
And now I'm two cents poorer....
