Hey,
You could get a bell kit (I'm sure it's cheaper), but all that will do is give you a very basic knowledge of the keyboard.
If you want to play marimba, get a marimba! Get at least a 4 octave instrument, you will have enough repertoire for a long time with that.
If money is an issue, you can look into alternatives from rosewood (the best sounding wood by far, and most expensive). Padauk is another kind of wood, not really high enough quality for performance, and they also make synthetic instruments. If you live near a college or high school that has any of these instruments, it might be a good idea to check them out, so you know how what you are about to buy will sound.
