Phil,
Not to run this into the ground, but let me rephrase my question(s), as I'm not certain what you're asking for.
Your first post asked for "any good songs for about an intermediate level i can play marimba with a small jazz quintet?"
Your unsolicited follow-up was, "oh and it doesnt have to be a jazz piece."
"????"
Are you soliciting suggestions for jazz standards which are well-suited to the marimba, or are you looking for fully composed/arranged pieces which do not require any improvisation?
Or both? Or something else entirely?
If you want songs which work well on the marimba, for an actual jazz group, it would probably be easier to play something in a Brazilian or Afro-Cuban style, such as:
Song For My Father (Horace Silver) Morning of the Carnival (a.k.a. "Black Orpheus") - Luis Bonfa St. Thomas (Sonny Rollins) Recorda Me (Joe Henderson) Blue Bossa (Kenny Dorham)
Or "standards" which are often played in some sort of Latin style:
Night And Day What Is This Thing Called Love? On Green Dolphin Street I'll Remember April
It's a little tougher to effectively play marimba on a straight-ahead jazz tune, but it can be done (as evidenced by Bobby Hutcherson). Let me know if you want any suggestions for straight-ahead tunes, or if you're looking for songs a little more advanced than the ones listed above.
