A couple of quick thoughts in response to Scott's post:
1) Gotta disagree, respectfully, with the condemnation of the Malletech Stout mallets. My set took a good long time to break in, more so than other mallets in my collection - but once they did, the sound improved tremendously. Right now, they're my favorite classical marimba mallet (esp. on Bach fugues), but as always, YMMV.
2) I haven't been through Innovative mallets enough to judge the brand on this count, but my experience with Malletech mallets has been that the quality control varies greatly - I've got some old Malletech Friedman mallets which have held up famously for fourteen years, but another set of the Friedmans were really crap. FWIW, personally, I'd avoid purchasing Malletech mallets sight-unseen (i.e., over the Internet or through the mail) unless you know ahead of time that you can return them for a refund or an exchange.
3) Agreed: in general, Encore mallets are vastly underrated.
4) "Crappy rattan shafts" on the Rosauros? Hmmm...not on the ones I tried, but as before, YMMV. Of the rattan-handled Innovative mallets I've checked out, the rattan has consistently been of high quality. If, however, you simply believe that *rattan* is "crappy" as a rule, well that's another discussion entirely... ;-)
