Hi, For my two cents' worth...I don't remember what age/ability level you are writing, but it seems our local high schools/middle schools (WI)have access to 4.3 octave marimbas (not necessarily rosewood), but 5.0s are way out of most school budgets. If you are writing for college age kids, you're probably OK writing for 5 octaves. If a high school would be lucky enough to have a 5 octave, their band director probably wouldn't let them play on it anyway ;) Have you ever seen what high school kids can do to a school instrument?
