The (out-of-date) orchestration books will say 4-octaves (C3-C7), but nearly every high school or college in the country will have 4.3 (A2-C7). Most major colleges will have 5.0 (C2-C7), with a few 4.5 (F2-C7) or 4.6 (E2-C7) along the way.
I do agree that ossia 4.3 versions of 5.0 repertoire would be very helpful. For beginners, there are many pieces written for 4.0 already, plus they could always steal entry level violin music for 3.5 range.
