I think it was posted a couple of years ago in PAS network that the popularity of Stevens grip in U.S. may be attributable to the fact that not many Colleges and Universities in U.S. did not have Marimba speciallist in the faculty -- in which case, the importance of well written text book becomes very important, and Stevens' book was one of the best around. In case of Japan, major music colleges had and has Marimba speciallist in their faculty, and textbooks were less important there. That's only an opinion, but I thought his comment may be speaking some insight when I read the article.

Nat,

I'm sure that's a big part of it. Also, to the best of my knowledge, most crossed-grip players do *not* spend much time and effort proclaiming that their grip is "superior" to other four-mallet grips. Stevens-grip players often do - perhaps to sell their (beginning) students on the value of the Stevens grip, to convince the students to spend the time and energy necessary to develop control of the grip? ("Teacher, why should I spend six months practicing exercises with the Stevens grip, when I can take up the Burton grip and be playing pieces after a week or two?" Well, there ARE reasons, which teachers should explain to their students...) There certainly are a number advantages to using the Stevens grip, but the resultant (false) impression that "crossed-grips are useless" is an unfortunate side-effect of the whole situation.

(And again, I use Stevens grip myself, along with a couple of others, and I use Stevens' textbook, whether or not the student uses Leighs grip - so I'm not trying to "Stevens bash" here...)

This might make for an interesting magazine essay, discussing where all of these biases come from. You see this sort of "you HAVE to..." mythology surrounding jazz vibraphone as well - teachers saying, "you HAVE to use a four-mallet grip, and that grip HAS to be Burton grip, end of discussion!" Same for traditional vs. matched grip on drum set.
