Dear Gordon, dear all,
About people having the opinion that the "bass notes on Malletech's are weak and thin and sounding like hitting hollow pieces of wood" - I find that different marimbas have different responses to strokes and general playing and sometimes people don't allow for this.
For example, if you play the trumpet it takes (a lot!) longer than 5 minutes to judge the difference between a Shilke and a Bach, for instance. I find that percussionists tend to judge instruments on a first contact with an individual instrument.
It took me quite a few concerts and practice time to get my head around the malletech, after playing for 8 years with Adams, so I am not surprised someone says that "bass notes on Malletech's are weak and thin and sounding like hitting hollow pieces of wood" or anything similar. Playing a musical instrument is not a question of hitting/bashing away... it takes time, thought, etc, etc, etc ... and some "poetry", as well...
Greetings to all, from rainy Lisbon,
Pedro
